Teaching Mi’gmaw has always been a dream for me. Returning as a mature student to earn a Bachelor of Education from McGill was no small feat, but at least it was completed in my Mi’gmaw community of Listuguj, amongst many current colleagues. I believe that passion can be a driver of positive change. The love I have for the Mi’gmaw language runs deep and is fueled by the belief that colonization can be pushed back with the original languages and identities returned to the keepers of our lands, its Indigenous people.
As a language learner and researcher, I enjoy finding new ways of teaching Mi’gmaw in a deep and meaningful way. This has made the work of language teaching a continuous journey of trial and error, meanwhile a treasure chest has been built and refined along the way.
Prior to becoming a Mi’gmaw immersion educator, I worked in curriculum as Curriculum Planner with the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government’s education directorate which spanned from April 2018 to August 2019. I am a strong believer in networking and visioning with fellow educators to achieve ‘Nnu culturally responsive best practices and curriculum.
